Do you have a class that you’re really good in or you just really love teaching? Why not try tutoring other people and expanding your knowledge at the same time?
Tutoring is a great way to make money while still in school. A lot of students even turn tutoring into a part-time job to help pay for their schooling and other expenses.
Tutoring is great for students because the times are flexible. Most companies allow you to structure your tutoring times around your study schedule.
It also looks great on your cover letter as it shows that you are so proficient in a subject that people trust you to teach them!
We’ll be focusing on Preply, a tutoring service that allows you to make money tutoring people in a range of subjects, from all around the world. If you love to meet new people and learn new things, this is for you!
Sound good? Then let’s get started!
What’s on this page?
What is Preply?
Preply is an online platform that connects people looking for help in a wide range of subjects and languages to tutors who have proven to be proficient in those subjects.
Currently, over 95,000 students have found help through tutors on Preply about everything from languages to sciences.
The platform has a comprehensive review system where students can rate their tutors (so you want to make sure you teach them well). It also has a time bundle package where students can pay for multiple hours with a tutor.
Before we get into more details about Preply though, let’s find out why you need to become a tutor in the first place.
Why become a tutor?
Tutoring isn’t for everyone. It takes some dedication and perseverance. In case you’re on the fence and need some persuading though, here’s 5 ways that tutoring can benefit you.
1. It can pay a lot
You can make some really good money as a tutor. Depending on your skill level and where you are, you could make anywhere from $10 to $100 per hour.
Of course this will vary if the subject you’re tutoring in is more specialized or more in demand, but it will definitely beat working a starter job on minimum wage, and you get to set your own schedule!
If you start to get a lot of clients, you could even make a business around it in your area and create a website to showcase your expertise to them.
2. You’ll learn new things
Not only will you be making money as a tutor, you’ll have the opportunity to learn new things as well.
A lot of tutors are proficient in the subject(s) they teach, but a lot are also constantly learning things when they prepare their lessons.
Tutoring new subjects could even lead you to new jobs or a new career path if you decide you really like that topic.
3. You make your own schedule
One of the best things about tutoring is that you get to make your own schedule. This is an enormous advantage while you’re in school because you can structure your tutoring hours around your studies.
If you have an appointment to tutor someone, you can even make a cancellation and schedule them another time (although we don’t recommend doing this too often). Try to keep your word as much as possible.
Having a dedicated schedule to manage your appointments will make sure you’re on time and it will help if you tutor multiple subjects.
4. You will gain experience
Probably the biggest takeaway from tutoring other people is that you will gain huge amounts of experience in different fields, which will look great on a cover letter.
By tutoring other people and creating a business around your talents, you are showing to potential employers that you have the thinking of an entrepreneur with the skills of a teacher. That’s a double win!
5. Tutoring will help in your studies
Most tutors start in the area of study that they know best because they are confident teaching other people.
When you tutor people in your field, you’re basically getting paid to study! By teaching other people the topics you’re learning in class, you’re reinforcing your knowledge of the subject.

Should I become a tutor?
Tutoring isn’t for everyone. If you want to make it work for you, there’s some things to consider before jumping in!
To become a great tutor and make a lot of money while doing it, you’re going to need:
1. Excellent subject-matter knowledge: To become a successful tutor, you need to really know your stuff. Unfortunately, thinking you know the subject won’t be good enough. There’s no point in tutoring someone only to provide them with fake resources and wrong information. You’re going to need some hard evidence of your expertise, such as grades or references.
2. Great communication skills: You need to be able to communicate the material effectively to your students. They come to you for help, and you don’t want to send them on a wrong path. If you’re working with younger children, you need to be able to communicate the progress of the student with the parent. Not being able to do this will reduce their confidence in your business.
3. Time management skills: Being timely is of the utmost importance when tutoring. Clients will get mad if you’re late, as you will if they are late. It’s okay to show up to class having just rolled out of bed, but being tardy to your tutoring sessions will scar your business.
4. Knowledge of exam and test tactics: Having some knowledge of exam and test tactics is essential when you tutor. Most students will bring it up at least once in their sessions, and they expect you to help them! Doing some research on the latest tactics for exams and tests will do wonders for your students, and you’ll be happy with the results too.
5. Patience: This is one of the most important qualities of a tutor. You will get frustrated but it’s how you handle it that matters. If you can’t show your parents how to do basic technical things like shopping online, maybe tutoring isn’t for you.
Getting started with Preply
Now that you’ve proved that you have all of the qualities to become a tutor, let’s dive right in!
As we saw above, we’ll be using Preply to get you started with tutoring, but feel free to use other tutoring companies or set up a local business at your school or in your area. The possibilities are endless so long as you have the skills!
> Create an account
First off, head over to Preply. Feel free to explore a bit and search for courses that you can tutor on the platform.
Once you’re comfortable with the layout, click the “login” button in the top-right corner, then click “sign up”, or sign up directly here. You will need an email account or Facebook to sign up.
After you sign in, you will be asked to agree to the Preply rules, then you can create your profile. You want a detailed profile so potential students can get a sense of who you are. Preply manually checks and verifies each tutor’s profile, so make sure it’s as complete as possible.
> Getting requests
Now you wait for students to send you requests! It may be a bit slow at first as you build up your ratings and prove to be a stellar tutor. After people recognize your prowess, requests for your services will start to flow in.
When you get a request from a student, they will detail their age, language level, and location, along with the time that works best for them. You will also have the chance to change the price for the lesson before you accept.
Make sure you have the relevant skills for the lesson and that you can effectively teach the students. If a student isn’t satisfied with the lesson, they may leave bad ratings and ask for a refund which will lead to you getting less requests.
You can also look in the “Students” section and promote yourself to students who post tutoring jobs that they need done.
> Receiving more lessons
Preply uses a “Lesson System”. When you complete a lesson, you must submit it in the “My Lessons” section to receive payment for it.
Once the student rates the lesson, they’ll be offered a payment package for more hours (in 5, 10, 15, or 20 hour sets). Students can then use those hours for your lessons.
> Make money tutoring with Preply
After you submit your lesson and Preply verifies it, the funds will be available in your account. You can withdraw using:
- Direct Transfer to Prepaid Mastercard
> Ratings on Preply
As we said before, you want to provide the best experience for your students so they’ll leave good ratings.
According to Preply, tutors on the front search page get 50% more requests than people on other search pages. If you can get the ratings, more requests will come naturally.
So you’ve seen how to make money tutoring with Preply. There are many other sites that will connect you with potential students who want your skills, but we found Preply to be one of the best.
